First IR Outing @ Sentosa and Strings & Serenades : Corrinne May in Concert @ NUS UCC

Sunday, 12th Feb 2006, was such an eventful and intriguing day that it will put a grin that stretches from ear to ear on my face for quite a while. Anyway, just to share this interesting day with you.

I started off my morning by waking up at 6:30am and prepared myself with all the necessary gears and make my way down to HarbourFront to meet up a group of photographers for an IR Outing. There is a total of 14 people who sign up for this outing and we were supposed to meet at the hawker centre behind HarbourFront Bus-Interchange at 8:30am for breakfast before proceeding to Sentosa for our IR shooting.

At around 9:25am or so, only 13 of us turn up for the outing and we took 4 cars and drove over the causeway leading to Sentosa. The first stop is around a big tree which is quite famous for bridal photography and also TV shows scenery.

After setting the Custom White Balance, I proceed to do my IR shot. In the process, I realised the importance of covering up the viewfinder when doing IR Photography. All thanks to the kind, patient and helpful pros who guide me along the way and showing me the ropes to do IR. It is very fun and interesting. Just to share a couple of shots that I did.

Our next destination is around the Ferry Terminal area which is quite near the Asian Civilisation Village and Musical Fountain;

Here are a few more shots taken around the garden.

In the process of shooting, Teerex (a real pro in IR, he can do IR without Tripod which is really amazing) pointed out to always observed the direction of the sun. If I am shooting in the direction of the sun, the leaves on the tree with turn out to be darker. So he advises me to try shooting in the opposite direction of the sun so that the sunlight can be reflect off the leaves on the tree which will give a better exposure and brighter colour in IR. This is a really valuable advice.

At around 12pm plus, we proceed to a restaurant for a buffet lunch. After lunch which is around 1:25pm or so, the rest proceed to the next destination which is the beach for another round of shooting. However, I got a concert later that evening and I need to go home early to rest and prepare for the concert. So, I left with Nisa (another photographer) as she drove me across the causeway and back to mainland Singapore.

The outing was really very fun and I have learnt a lot more about IR Photography. Most of all, I manage to know a group of friendly and helpful photographers who have a great interest in IR Photography.

After an eventful morning of photo shoot, I went home to rest to prepare myself for Corrinne May's concert. I have always wanted to go to her concert but I missed it 2 times already (One time was in the start of 2005 around January, I was in US at that time. The second time was some time in August 2005 and I didn't realise that she will be performing at the Esplanade). This time round, I got my tickets early, in fact, I got it on the first day of the ticket release and within a few minutes after the SISTEC system is open for booking.

I went to the NUS UCC at around 7:15pm to listen to her concert; the setup of the stage is really nice with the blue lightings which really give it a nice atmosphere for a great evening concert. The layout of the stage is with a grand piano with two percussion sets and some other musical instruments all set up nicely. The show started at around 7:45pm or 8:00pm with the appearance of Corrinne May in a dark red evening dress.

Corrinne starts her concert with :
Mr Beasley (followed by the rest of the songs in the list, hope I got them right)
Angel In Disguise
Free
Little Superhero Girl
Same Side of The Moon
Shelter (a new song for all the Eeyores which is suppose lonely and down-in-the-dumps, I simply love this song)
Fly Away (The lyrics of this song is really so touching that tears begin to form in my eyes as she sung it)
Journey
Something About You
Fall to Fly
Leaving (Another new song that she is still working on, she fumbled during this song because she started with the wrong note literally. Halfway into the first verse, she stopped and said that it was too low, but she managed to get the right key later and all the audience laughs and claps.)
Safe In A Crazy World
Let It Go
Everything In Its Time
The Birthday Song (One of my favourite, it is a song telling people not to be afraid of growing old)
Save Me
If I Kissed You
Every Beat of My Heart
Beautiful Seed (Another new song, she talked about being marvelled by how small things can lead to something big and powerful, like a tiny seed into a gigantic tree)

During her concert, Corrinne actually talk about her inspiration behind her songs, she also crack some jokes with the audience in which some are quite corny and she admitted it, that was so nice. One of the things she mentioned is that every moment that had just past become part of the memory, that is so true as this is the same movitation for me to take up photography.

Anyway, the concert ended at around 9:20pm and there is an autograph session by Corrinne May, but it is really, really a pity I didn't bring her album at that time and I left my camera at home (yes, I was afraid that they will inspect the bags when entering the concert hall because they said any photography, videography or other recording devices are not allowed. Now that I realise it, I really regret it).

Anyway, I stay for a while to see Corrinne May up close in person as she proceed to do her autograph. I didn't realise that she is a left-handed, well I guess left-handed people tends to develop other side of talent which right-handed don't have.

Anyway, this is really a remarkable and interesting day that I hope to always remember. Thanks for reading such a long post. Hope you enjoyed it.
